James received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature with a specialty in fiction / creative writing and a minor in Adolescent Psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park. He completed teacher certification training in English Secondary Education from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. James held secondary level teaching certification in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Texas. He also received certification as a Counselor / Family Resource Assessor for The Student Assistance Program (SAP) of the School District of Philadelphia.
Originally from Washington, D.C. area, James has distinguished himself with more than 20 years of experience in teaching English and Humanities in Washington, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Texas. He has experience teaching Gifted and Talented, At-Risk, Alternative, Honors, and Pre Ap students in elementary, middle, and high schools. His experience includes training in Project Based Learning (PBL), creating curriculum, and participating in key educational programs for teaching Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in urban, rural, and suburban school districts. He has also served as Team Leader and Department Head for the district alternative school for the Christina School District in Wilmington, Delaware and as a visiting presenter/lecturer for the teacher certification preparatory program at the University of Pennsylvania. He also taught Freshman Writing and Creative Writing at the University of Maryland, College Park.
James was Teacher of the Year in the Christina School District in Wilmington, Delaware and participated as a part of a school based RTI leadership team in Newark, Delaware. With a strong priority in implementing academic interventions and a strong school culture, he has participated as a part of a high school campus based RTI leadership team. He has been a sponsor of various clubs and programs in schools including Class sponsor and Student Government Sponsor. Here at UME, he implemented curriculum for the first Junior and Senior English classes. He served as At-Risk Coordinator, College Application and Scholarship Coordinator, Leader of the Administrative Culture Committee and the UME Chapter NHS Sponsor.
Furthermore, James has implemented educational exposure programs and opportunities for schools such as an annual East Coast College Tour Opportunity to colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Florida. He has also participated in the leadership of college tour opportunities and the college preparation and exposure Success Program in Texas through Dallas ISD.
James enjoys exploring and traveling throughout Texas celebrating it’s rich and vibrant landscape and culture through photography.
